Volcano Tours

Evening Volcano Explorer (Hilo) in Hilo HI

Make Kilauea Volcano and Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park your destination, and stay past sunset! This is a fully narrated adventure that starts at the KapohoKine Adventures' store in downtown Hilo where you can stock up on adventure gear from Patagonia, Keen, and Columbia, or start your adventure on their indoor climbing wall. Boarding your tour vehicle, the lush greenery of Hilo gives way to stark black basalt lava flows in Kalapana, a village completely destroyed by the advancing lava just a few years ago.

First stop will be a walk across the recent lava flows to the newest black sand beach on the island. You will witness how the colvano engulfed everything in it's path, even completely filled in Kaimu Bay with molten lava. This walk takes you over what once was the best swimming beach on Hawaii Island.

Next stop is the Lava Viewing Area in Kalapana, where your vehicle drives over the lava flows that overran the highway. Look for any current volcanic activity available before heading to the Painted Church. Now decommissioned, it was the first home in Hawaii to Saint Damien before he famously found his calling amongst the lepers of Molokai. This Church was so important to determined local villagers that it was moved, not once but twice, to evade the advancing molten lava flows.

Finally, your Park Ranger-trained guide reveals the highlights of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, from active volcanic craters and steam vents to the historic Jaggar Museum. Watch for current volcanic activity as the sun sets before returning to Hilo. Dinner is included. Tour duration is approximately 6 hours.

Grand Circle Island Tour - Hawaii Island in Kailua-Kona, Big Island HI

This daylong adventure is the perfect showcase for the Big Island’s most unique sights and locations. It’s a great way to explore this fascinating place.

There will be a stop at Royal Kona Coffee in the midst of the coffee-growing region. It’s a remarkable place of organic beauty. The lush coffee bean trees seem to spring up among the other island foliage. The area also overlooks Kealakekua Bay, offering spectacular views of its pristine waters.

Then visit lava fields where various shades of solidified lava reveal the entire island’s past volcanic activity. You’ll actually be able to see a distinct dividing line where the lava fields end and the lush farmland begins. While you enjoy the changing landscape, you’ll want to prepare yourself for a visit to the nearby is Punaluu Beach, the amazing black sand beach where sea turtles often nest.

Next you’ll be on your way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You’ll begin at the Jaggar Museum and Hawaii Volcano Observatory. Be on the lookout for the active, smoldering crater nearby. Active volcanoes are still present and continuing to add to the landscape of dried lava flow. Here is also where you’ll find Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano, and Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. There’s also Thurston Lava Tube, and located in a small crater, the Fern Tree Jungle. If the conditions are safe, you’ll actually circle a crater when you ride along Crater Rim Drive.
