In 2009, Kai, our top instructor, completed the contest season as the Hawaiian and North American longboard champion as well as the No. 2 ranked longboard surfer in the world on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) WLT (World Longboard Tour). He is also the defending two-time PLA (Professional Longboard Association) champion.
Aside from being one of the best surfers in the world, Kai also has a long history of sharing his love of surfing with others. He’s been teaching friends, family, acquaintances and customers to ride waves since he was 12 years old.
Growing up in Waikiki, Kai was taught how to surf at a young age on the rolling waves in the area by his father, who was one of the original Waikiki Beach Boys. His father has been teaching surfing for over 35 years, and that’s where Kai gained his propensity for teaching his lifelong passion.
Although Kai learned and continues to surf in Waikiki, he feels that nowadays the lineups have become too crowded, and in turn, too dangerous for beginner surfers.
That is why with Pro Surf School Hawaii, all lessons are taught outside of Waikiki, away from the dangerous crowds, at a secluded surf spot, in beginner-friendly slow rolling waves.

The Kohala Waterfalls Adventures tour begins with a wonderful drive of contrast and change from the dry-side resort area to the lush green country of Kohala. Along the way you'll journey up the North Kona and Kohala coastlines over lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains. Often from the shoreline you are able to see splashing spinner dolphins or in the winter months, breaching humpback whales. You'll pass through the quaint plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, site of the life-size statue of King Kamehameha I. At the end of the road a brief rest stop at the historic Kohala Mule Station offers one of Hawaii's most spectacular coastal views. Then the real fun begins, with a bumpy but short off-road drive in our 6WD Pinzgauer on an old cane road over private ranchland to our trailhead.
This Tour is great for:
Hawaii’s Big Island is twice as large as all the other Hawaiian islands combined. In world-renowned Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you can witness active lava regions and even lava flows from the world’s most active volcano. Gigantic Mauna Kea is taller (measured from its base) than Mt. Everest, and the majestic Hamakua Coast, and its jewel, the Waipio Valley, boast 2,000-ft. cliffs and 1,200-ft. cascading waterfalls. There’s no way to see all this epic scenery except by air, and only Blue Hawaiian makes sure you don’t miss a thing.
Tour routes and sights visited may vary according to wind and weather conditions. Volcanic activity varies hourly.
The Travel Channel named Blue’s tour of the Big Island’s Hawaii Volcanoes National Park #1 in the “Top Ten World’s Best Helicopter Experiences.”
Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours has been the Big Island’s air-tour leader since 1990—with bases in both Waikoloa and at the Hilo International Airport.

Named by Hawaiians long ago, Hakalau means "many perches" and is still considered critical bird habitat today. Once part of large cattle ranch, it was the first National Wildlife Refuge established in the United States for forest birds. It is home to some of the rarest plants and animal species on earth. Hakalau Forest is a fascinating example of conservation in action. The forest you'll access is recovering from a hundred years of grazing by cattle and damage from pigs. Our permit allows us to bird the Pua Akala meadow. Giant koa trees, ohia-lehua trees estimated to be a thousand years old, ferns, and rare lobeliads are just some of the native plants encountered.
This Tour is great for:
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an inspiring and precious place. It is listed as both a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere preserve. Once at the park we will see splendid native rainforest, visit a lava tube, discover remarkable volcanic formations and experience an incredible diversity of geography and climates. Through detailed geologic and natural history interpretation, short walks and driving, we explore and learn about the world's most active volcano. A picnic lunch is served en route during our adventure through the park.
You'll really get an idea of how big the Big Island is during the course of this tour. And you'll appreciate that someone else is doing the driving. Starting out from our headquarters in Kona, we travel up the coast over desolate lava flows for about a half hour before proceeding up the rolling pasturelands on the flanks of Mauna Kea. Turning onto the Saddle Road that traverses the island between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, you'll see a dramatic and diverse landscape of ranchland, sub-alpine dryforest and rainforest (with striking features such as cinder cones, lava flows, lava tubes and kipuka).
We'll stop for a short break and continental-style breakfast. Continuing on, we drop down to near sea-level on our way through Hilo where we begin the final climb to the summit of Kilauea and the lush entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the way back, we'll travel along the Hamakua Coast and pass through Waimea before returning to Kona. By the end of the day, you'll have traveled over 300 miles and experienced an elevation change (we go up and down a few times!) of over 30,000 feet.
Schedule: Morning trips departing daily. 11 - 12 hours round trip, departs from Hawaii Forest & Trail Headquarters, and Waikoloa Kings' Shops.

The excursion begins as we travel between two of the world’s largest mountains, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The region between these volcanoes is locally known as the Saddle and is home to some of the rarest plants and animals in the world. After a brief stop for lunch at Mauna Kea State Park, we continue east towards Hilo. Before our final descent into the rainiest city in the US, we’ll stop to explore Kaumana Cave. This lava tube once carried molten rock from Mauna Loa’s upper rift zones down to the ocean, but now provides an excellent opportunity to test our trusty flashlights on a subterranean adventure.
Leaving Mauna Loa behind, we make our final ascent to the summit of Kilauea inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Our Interpretive Guides will lead you through the must-see spots and hidden gems of this World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Preserve. As conditions change daily, we tailor your experience to the current eruptive events. The summit caldera, steam vents, cinder fields, and native rainforests are all on our “must see” list.
After exploring the natural wonders of this World Heritage site, we’ll check current conditions to see which eruptive site is most active. Our choices are Kalapana to witness the awesome power of lava as it enters the ocean at sunset, or Halemaumau Crater which contains a hidden lake of molten rock which glows after dark. Also included in the evening’s itinerary is a delicious picnic dinner. This is an incredible way to experience the dynamic energy of Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world.
This Tour is great for:
The drive to the summit of Mauna Kea is one you'll never forget. It's hard to believe you're in Hawaii as you climb to 13,796' elevation above sea level. Once at the summit we are afforded spectacular views of the horizon, Haleakala on Maui, Mauna Loa and Hualalai, and Mauna Kea's world-class array of telescopes. Mauna Kea is the world's tallest mountain, rising over 32,000 feet from the ocean floor to its summit, which is considered by many Hawaiians to be the most sacred place in all the islands.
Starting out from our headquarters in Kona, we travel up the coast over desolate lava flows for about a half hour before proceeding up the rolling pasturelands on the flanks of Mauna Kea. We arrive at our private dinner location at Humuula approximately 2 hours before sunset for a hot, picnic dinner served family style. After dinner and with a winter-style parka in hand, we’ll make the 45 minute drive to the summit. As your make your way up, you’ll be fascinated by your Interpretive Guide’s interpretation of Hawaii’s remarkable natural, cultural, and geologic history.
After sunset we descend to the Visitor's Information Station at 9000' elevation. Here we set up our own telescope and have a star gazing party. Wrapped warm in Arctic parkas, enjoying hot beverages and chocolate macadamia nut cookies, you will marvel at the brilliance of the Hawaiian night sky. Your Interpretive Guide will share with you stories of the world of the observable universe, and offer you a personal and educational look at the heavens.
Schedule: Afternoon trips depart daily from Hawaii Forest and Trail Headquarters, Waikoloa Kings' Shops, and the Junction of Highways 190 and 200. Tour Duration is 7 - 8 hours round trip.

Aloha! Welcome Aboard Hawaii's Most Popular Sunset Dinner Cruise.
The Star of Honolulu entertains more guests than all other sunset dinner cruises and we've been sharing our Aloha with visitors for 55 years. We offer the widest range of cruise selection and prices — from our sumptuous seven-course French style dining to our value-packed Pacific Star Buffet, you'll find just the right cruise aboard the "Star." Our spacious and stable 232' ship is Hawaii's largest vessel of its kind. Its four walk-around decks and 60' high observation deck provide the best views and our cast of entertainers is the largest on Hawaiian waters. Come aboard and join us!)
The Na Pali Dinner Sunset Sail is our premier “dinner with a view” experience. Sunsets at sea, viewed from Southern Star, are spectacular. Passengers will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire coastline from Haena to Milolii, with the “forbidden” island of Ni’ihau in the distance. Each day is unique, as the light reacts with clouds and landscapes. Rainbows frequently add color to the distant mountains.
The sail starts with a short briefing and introduction as we depart from Port Allen and head West, then North and upwind on the Na Pali (depending on the conditions).
Meanwhile our team of onboard chefs will get busy preparing the fresh meal. Unlike other charter boats, Southern Star is equipped with a full galley (kitchen) and bar. This means that the meal can be prepared fresh onboard instead of the standard practice of pre-cooking food.
On most days the Hawaiian tradewinds are blowing from the East, which makes for a perfect downwind sail once we reach our turnaround point. The crew’s objective on this sail is to position the boat for a calm, downwind sail during dinner service. Once we reach our turnaround, the crew will power down Southern’s twin diesels and hoist the massive mainsail and jib. Now you’re set up for some sailing, relaxing and yummy food.
We time the sail to pull in at Port Allen near dusk, our goal is to return you to shore safe, happy and full.

On the slopes of Hualalai lies the world famous Kona Coffee Belt. Nourished by afternoon showers and rich volcanic soil, this region produces some of the finest and most sought after coffee in the world. On this fun and exciting exploration we’ll journey from sea-level through a dense rainforest to a world of volcanic majesty at the 6,000 ft. elevation on the privately owned lands of Kaupulehu. Although in plain sight of Kailua-Kona, these seldom-visited uplands are seemingly geologic light-years away.
The story of Kona Coffee unfolds as we explore the volcanic and royal history of this area. Amidst distinctive native birdsongs, our rock-rambling tour will take you through a beautiful and surreal landscape of native dryland forest, lava flows and stunning craters. We focus on the northwest rift of Hualalai where most of the volcanic activity has been concentrated over the years. Along with three distinctive types of craters, your Interpretive Guide will also lead you on foot on an exploration through an impressive lava tube. If you don’t have time to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this is your chance to experience a Hawaiian volcano.
After exploring the area’s volcanic features we’ll descend into the Kona Coffee Belt to a family-owned coffee estate. This working coffee farm encompasses all aspects of the coffee process: growing, harvest, processing, roasting and packaging all happens here. You’ll go behind the scenes to see how bright red coffee cherries are hand-picked, meticulously sorted for color and size, then roasted to perfection to produce a delicious cup of Kona coffee. Of course, you’ll have a chance to sample the varieties and roasts, and buy whole-bean coffee direct from the farmer.
If you’ve always wondered what makes Kona Coffee so special then this is the tour for you!

Rainforest - Our destination is the Puu Oo Trail, a historic cattle drive route, located at the 6,000 foot level of Saddle Road on Mauna Loa's northeastern flank. This is the windward side of the island, and is often cloaked in misty clouds. It is enchanting to be serenaded by the forest birds as we make our way over three to four miles of sometimes rough lava trail, crossing over the 1855 and 1881 lava flows.
Dryforest - At the Humuula hunter check-in station just off Saddle Road, we go into the Kaohe Game Management Area and four-wheel it to nearly 7000 feet on the western side of Mauna Kea.
The drive: On the drive to our two primary locales, we head north along the coastline before starting the climb to the old Mamalahoa Highway, keeping an eye out for open-country birds. From there we'll connect to the Saddle Road and begin car-birding, primarily for game birds as well as for the Pueo, or short-eared owl. Depending on the weather, we'll stop for a bit of breakfast along the Saddle Road, often at Mauna Kea State Park at Pohakuloa.
Rainforest - Some of the avifauna we hope to spot along the way are iiwi, apapane, amakihi, omao, elepaio, and the elusive akiapolaau, with its unique multipurpose beak. Many of these are found in the ohia and koa canopy.
Dryforest - The track leads to a locked gate that is the entrance to the Mauna Kea Forest Preserve. There we disembark the van and take in the spectacular views. Then we get down to some serious bird watching, on foot in the mamane-naio forest. Although the terrain is somewhat uneven, the hiking is easy. We are particularly interested in sighting the critically threatened palila, which feeds almost entirely on the green pods of the mamane tree.

Tour Highlights
This Southern Star sailing adventure gets an early departure from Port Allen on the West shore of Kauai. As we head towards Na Pali you’ll see views of Niihau, Polihale and the ridges of Kokee. The am departure generally means we have calmer conditions and virtually ensures an encounter with the massive pod of Hawaiian Spinner dolphins that cruise up the coast daily.
Generally we take a nearshore route up the entire coast then sail downwind offshore so you get a variety of views. On Na Pali you’ll see spectacular sea cliffs, numerous waterfalls and lava tubes. Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands, and this carved coastline is the result of nearly 8 million years of exposure to wind, waves and rain. In addition to seagoing skills, our crew is knowledgeable in the history and legends of the ancient civilizations that once inhabited these verdant valleys.
After a relaxing and beautiful downwind sail, we’ll pull in to one or our favorite remote snorkel spots. Here, we anchor and passengers can get in the water, or simply relax. After snorkeling the crew prepares a delicious lunch in our onboard kitchen, which we serve with beer and wine (only available after snorkeling). Lastly, we’ll cruise home to Port Allen.
Attire and Facilities: Our passengers enjoy large shaded cabin areas, comfortable cushioned seating, clean rest rooms and freshwater showers. Wear your swimsuits and bring a towel and sunscreen.
Snorkeling, Weather and Destinations: Snorkel gear and instruction provided. Na Pali Coast and snorkeling are conditions permitting. Tour destination will be determined based on passenger comfort and safety.
Menu:
Continental Breakfast: Assorted pastries - fruit - juice and coffee.
BBQ Lunch: Your choice of burger, chicken burger or vegetarian burger. Cole Slaw - Baked Beans. Fresh Baked Cookies for dessert. Beer and wine available after snorkeling.
No Children under the age of 2 allowed.)
Enjoy four hours of adventure featuring sailing, great food, and sunsets. We'll sail along Na Pali as the afternoon sun paints rich colors across the sky. Equally rich are the history and legends about the ancient Hawaiians that once inhabited these remote valleys. You're likely to see flying fish, sea turtles, dolphins and whales (in season). Then, top it all off with a romantic dinner and breathtaking sunset at sea.
