"Brought me to tears"
July, 2016
How can a historical review in dance and song bring a pragmatic mainlander to tears? Through beautiful choreography, mesmerizing songs and aerial beauty. Presented with outstanding costumes and simple effects with fabric, percussion and props this production transported me into the lives of early Maui residents. I lived their struggles and emotions as vivid colors filled the stage and extended out into the audience. A must see. One of the highlights of my trip.

We went here to see the show from a recommendation made by the Concierge Desk at our Timeshare unit on Thursday night November 16, 2017. We told if we paid cash that, we could get $10 off each $85 ticket in the Gold level seating. She had 2 discount coupons left, so we took the chance from the reviews on the brochure and paid $150 for 2 seats. In addition, when we went to the Maui Theatre to pick out our seats there was a TripAdvisor sticker on the front door, so I felt it was a safe decision to go to this show. We got our seats in the Gold Level Seating area, right on the end of the row "K". When we arrived for the show, there were all empty seats behind our row. There were no people seated in the section to the left and a 1/4 of the section to our right filled. The show is in an old movie theatre. The performance was an interpretative dance show with no story line that was apparent to us. The music was good, so I could gave it 2 out of 5 on the review. Don't waste your money on this show. The guy seated in front of us got up and walked out before the end of the show. My Fiancée hated it and was very disappointed and felt taken, since this was to be my Christmas Gift from her. Rates A Return: Absolutely NOT!

I was very torn about how to rate this event...the Show was very good!!, But the dinner that followed WAS NOT worth 1/2 of what we paid for it!! First, the show...it is interpretive dance showing the history of Hawaii in dance. It is a little hard to follow and they do give you a program describing the "scenes"...but it is too dark in the theater to read it! The actors worked hard and di d very well telling the story with dance, chants and song (in Hawaiian). I think I heard about 18 words in English! Now the dinner part..after the show, you have to find your own way "next door" to a converted storefront where they have a small band and a server-manned buffet. The menu is basic Hawaiian mixed plate - pulled pork, maniated chicken thighs, rice and mac-salad and green salad. Just what you get in any local eatery for $12-18...but here you get to pay $35-40 per person for it! Beverage choice was coke or water. That was the rip-off. i know I'm in tourist land and expect to pay more for items, but this was over the top by far! Buy a lesser ticket and enjoy a much-better local meal after the show!

One of the best ways to see, hear and feel Hawai'i history and culture. While references to myth and village life may be less familiar and even tricky to understand to some, the value of family and cultural identify should resonate with anyone. The music is wonderful, the performers passionate and dedicated. Do not miss this.

We did some amazing things in Maui and saved this until the end so maybe my expectations were too high. However, we did not enjoy this show and were bored. First of all, the theater is freezing cold. They were also 10 minutes late starting the show. Once it did begin, we thought that some of the dancers were talented but found the story very hard to follow due to the fact that we were not really introduced to any of the characters and therefore did not understand what their relationships were to one another. The story seemed jump around a lot and did not make a whole lot of sense. I was much more entertained by watching the 2 men who were doing the music and sound effects than I was by what was happening on stage. For the amount of money that they charged for the tickets, I assumed that I would see a much more entertaining show. I went into it expecting to learn about the history of the island. However, I ended up learning WAY more from the free app that we downloaded on for our road to Hana trip than I did from this show.

Great show with live music and sound effects. It is based on the culture of Hawaii and not a Cirque de Solei type show. Lots of movement around the theatre by the performers with lots of props. Very entertaining.
