"Brought me to tears"
July, 2016
How can a historical review in dance and song bring a pragmatic mainlander to tears? Through beautiful choreography, mesmerizing songs and aerial beauty. Presented with outstanding costumes and simple effects with fabric, percussion and props this production transported me into the lives of early Maui residents. I lived their struggles and emotions as vivid colors filled the stage and extended out into the audience. A must see. One of the highlights of my trip.
Tip: Every seat is a good seat in this small theatre. Be on time, you don't want to miss a moment.

"Just wow - what a production"

I am a dancer myself and was in a dance-theater troupe on the mainland, but mine was more of an amateur production. Still I recognize great stagecraft when I see it. Everything about this show is well done, from the use of props, lighting, LIVE music, singing, and creativity that went into this production. There is even aerial silks, incorporated so seamlessly into the story that it didn't feel forced. The show pays so much respect to Hawaiian culture and I spent the whole car ride home reading up on Hawaiian history. The dancers had so much energy and presence, although they do this show several nights a week, you could tell they were very experienced at it - but still had that first-night energy and passion. There were plenty of funny bits, ooh and awe moments - especially when Pele erupts - and there was a message too. I was so happy that we went to this instead of a Luau. I have seen Polynesian shows that trivialize the culture and pander to a white audience. This show did not do that by far. In fact, it sent a message about colonialism but then also ended with a message of hope, of bringing all of Hawaii's cultures together to make something greater than its parts. At the same time, it entertained without selling out - it showed the beauty of Hawaiian culture. And there is even audience participation, perfectly placed to ease the tension/excitement over the climactic final scene - and then moving into a beautiful finale.

My wife and I won tickets to see this production. Even if I had paid for tickets, it would have been well worth the price. ʻUlalena’s storyline and characters centers around the island of Maui, and its creation, transformation and rebirth.

I had seen the show before, but was excited to take my daughter (teen). She was mesmerized by the beautiful music and dance, as well as I, even seeing the production before. This continues to be an excellent way to communicate Hawaiian history, and artistry. I would highly recommend the show to anyone interested in the culture and beauty of the islands.

"Wonderful evening of entertainment"

This is a play depicting the history of the Hawaiian people and their origins and voyage from Polynesia. It is told in costume, dance and song. The music and Hawaiian language is beautiful, and the evening reminded me of The best of broadway without the glitz. This tugged at your heart and made you feel good. They received a well deserved standing ovation

"Not a luau show"
TripAdvisor user rating 4 out of 5
Reviewed March 15, 2017
We wanted something different from the typical luau show, especially since we didn't want to deal with the luau buffet food. This show has no resemblance to a luau show at all so if you don't care to hear ukes it see hula and fire dancers this may be just right for you. The performers are talented and the production very professional. There are some violent loud scenes that may frighten young children, although our 3 year old was surprisingly ok with it. All of us enjoyed the show for the price we paid - about $100 for 4 adults 'platinum' seating since we got two free tickets and two at half price. I would have been very unhappy to have paid full price for this show though.
