"Brought me to tears"
July, 2016
How can a historical review in dance and song bring a pragmatic mainlander to tears? Through beautiful choreography, mesmerizing songs and aerial beauty. Presented with outstanding costumes and simple effects with fabric, percussion and props this production transported me into the lives of early Maui residents. I lived their struggles and emotions as vivid colors filled the stage and extended out into the audience. A must see. One of the highlights of my trip.

"A pretentious, contrived and self-indulgent bitty show"

Supposedly about the settlement and evolution of society of Hawaii. Actually bits of unconnected performances to show off the skills of some of the performers. Parts of Circue du Soleil - good. Group dancing - good. Some comedy - not so good. Scenes not connected. I would call it Performances at a Gathering. Then I would not be disappointed, as both of us were.

Everyone - all ages - enjoyed it. This is the best way to see authentic Hawaiian hula dancing and culture, and the music was excellent. It was a very memorable part of our trip and It was very well done. The seating was comfortable and had plenty of legroom and all of the seats in the theater had an excellent view.

"So Sad"

I have been coming to Maui since the late 60s. The show “Ulalena” started performing about 25 years ago, roughly. Over that period of time I have seen the show six or seven times, and have recommended it highly to everyone I know who is coming to Maui. Seeing it this time was such a disappointment. It is a shell of what it used to be. It lacks the storyline, the talent and the excitement that has kept me coming back over all these years. It is clearly being phased out, and I am heartbroken to say I do not believe it’s worth the money to go see it anymore. The Maui theater group is wise in starting another show “Burn ‘N Love” (which I enjoyed a lot!), as Ulalena clearly does not have the pull that used to have. Nor should it, in its present form. I gave it an average rating, but for those who have seen it before, you will believe that it is poor rather than average. This is a tradition that is falling apart, and it makes me very sad. Goodbye to Ulalena. Glad I knew you in the glory days.

"Lovely show "

Really enjoyed the show. It was visually very artsy and creative! Wonderful live music and crazy sound effects! I was just as mesmerized by the musicians as the performers. The few complaints I had were the lax cell phone policy and the introductions to each act. A woman sitting next to us kept using her cell phone to read the information paper and it was SO distracting. There should be an enforced no cell phone policy. Also I think that there should be a clearer introduction to each act so people know what’s going on. I know a bit about Hawaiian legends but others in my group didn’t and were very confused. Last thing I wasn’t excited about was the plastic water bottles and straws. Come on Ulalena.... you should be leading by example when it comes to caring for this island! Other establishments have banned plastic water bottles and plastic straws. You should do the same!

"Great Show of Hawaiin History"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5
Reviewed April 07, 2018 NEW
We weren’t really feeling the traditional luau and this show was recommended to us by some Hawaiians. We decided to check it out and were glad we did! A very interesting and entertaining show. Come prepared with a little brush up on your Hawaiian history to get the full effect. I ended up reading “A Concise History of Hawaiian Islands” after and the show made a lot more sense. They hand out a short explanation paper at the box office which gives you enough to go on and they have some narration to provide some hand holds but “ A Concise History” helped fill in some blank spots that weren’t completely clear. And it is a quick read. Lots of various traditional dances are displayed here beyond your typical luau. The cast was excellent. The singing lovely and haunting. The acrobatics, while not necessarily Cirque du Soleil quality, was well done. Our teenagers and us had a good time discussing the story after and laughed at the way myth (which had a lot of funny characters) and history were interwoven. Maui and Pele show up and give excellent performances. Highly Recommended.
