Description

from Rock-A-Hula®
Rock-a-Hula! is a spectacular live concert featuring a "Hawaiian Journey" from 1920's to current through music and powerful performances by Legends Artists, hula, fire knife dancers and amazing musicians at the Royal Hawaiian Theater.

Along with legendary artists of yesteryear, our guests enjoy contemporary popular musical artistry showcased on the same stage as the thrilling historic performers. Imagine the “King of Rock n Roll” alongside the “King of Pop” singing on stage together with Elton John and Madonna. It happens 6 nights a week (excluding Mondays) at Legends in Concert Waikiki!

The 75-minute show was specifically developed for Hawaii and has been artistically infused with Hawaiian song and dance that underscores the island connections of the original artists. The concert begins with a huge, 42-foot tall, 3-screen visual experience that “lands” the audience in Hawaii where they are greeted by ancient Hawaiian chants and kahiko hula.

During the show, historic Hawaiian performances of the original artists are recreated through the magic of computerized projections of actual concert footage blended with live, on-stage singing and dancing by the tribute artists and a dozen professional dancers. The concert concludes as the audience joins in singing Aloha ‘Oe, the most beloved of all Hawaiian songs, composed by Princess Lili‘uokalani

The show’s name, “Rock-a-Hula!” is taken from the Elvis hit song, Rock-a-Hula Baby. The song’s mixed genre of rock and roll and Hawaiian folk captures the essence of Legends in Concert Waikiki.

"Show was great, BUT dinner and service a BIG disappointment"

We were at the show back in 2017 when we visited Hawaii, so we decided to go again in 2018, especially since they advertised a Magical Christmas show. We decided to also have dinner there, since the ad on the website said that there were "private" tables and a sumptuous "stagesideVIP 4-course dinner". We can only assume that they had a lot more people attend than normal, because we were smashed in very tight. The tables were so close to each other, you could not put your hand between them. The first thing that I thought of was "this is NOT as advertised". The server seemed really rushed from the minute that we were seated. The lobster and salad as well as the dinner roll was already served at our places, so we had something to eat right away. That was a good thing, because it took a very, very long time to be served our salmon and beef entrees. The table of 2 right next to us were served, but then our table of 2 and the table next to us of 4 were not served for 27 more minutes. I know, I checked my watch! We asked twice about getting our meals and both times were told that they would be coming right away. When they finally arrived, everyone around us was finishing their dessert and many of the people arriving just for the show were already seated above us. The beef was cooked medium but was not very warm. Oh, and I mentioned that we were jammed in pretty tight. When I tried to cut in to my beef, I had to be very careful when raising my elbows, so I did not bump in to the people seated on either side of me, in their "private" tables! WAY too close to each other! The salmon piece was dry around the edges and cold, I mean cold to the touch. It was like it was taken out of the refrigerator and left to sit on the counter for hours. The vegetables were so crunchy, I wondered if they had been steamed for 10 seconds at best. The server started really rushing again, since the show was going to start and we did not have dessert yet. The gelato was great, although our "pineapple delight" did not seem to have any macadamia nut crumble as had been advertised (and they gave us little menus and encouraged us to take them home--so I am referring to it right now, as I write). The coffee was barely warm. By contrast, the show was high energy, well choreographed, with great costumes and my husband and I thought it was better even than last year. So our advice is to go to the show and skip the dinner. We spent $150 PP for the show and dinner and could have gotten a much better dinner elsewhere, for less money and it would have been more enjoyable! BTW, we stopped for a snack on the way back to the hotel, since we were both still hungry.

"Dinner and Show at Rock-A-Hula"

We had a fabulous time starting with cocktails and dinner before the show. When we finished dinner, we were shown into the auditorium where we opted to have our photograph taken or not with showgirls but, we had brought our own camera so didn't have to pay. So bring your own camera. You are allowed to take photos of the show but not with a flash which we did as well. I highly recommend this show for overseas visitors. We have seen it twice now, once was 2 years ago with Lady Gaga, Elvis and Michael. This year unfortunately we missed Celine Dion and just had a local as well as Elvis and Michael. So we were a bit disappointed but the show was excellent with dancing hula girls and fire dancing. Elvis sang all his great hits. A handsome young man but, he didn't look anything like the real one who I adored when I was young but still he sounded great. He also went round the audience and picked people out to drape scarves around their necks. The show was absolutely brilliant and I think Michael Jackson stole the show with all his moves

"New Year's Eve Gala"

A really good show to welcome the new year. The meal was beyond expectation. The lobster salad was tasty & the lobster tasted like lobster. The main of beef & salmon was equally good - the beef was medium rare to the table(something difficult to do for a big crowd). The dessert didn't quite match the description but nonetheless acceptable. The Kona coffee was rich & strong & aromatic. Service was attentive despite the crowd. Our server Evan was very good - came round often to top up drinks, took photos for us & checked our Michael Jackson gloves and ended up giving us new ones where the flickering lights worked well. The show was energetic. Elvis & Michael Jackson played their roles well. They worked the audience, came round to the tables & readily signed autographs & take photos after the show.

"Food Terrible"

We visited on Christmas Eve and paid for a stage side VIP dinner & show. I am disappointed to say, as I don't like to give bad reviews and love Elvis but, it was terrible and the food was awful. I don't know how long the pupus or lobster starters had been on the tables when we arrived but the lobster tasted fishy and the meat pupus had the distinct texture of having been on display for a long time. I thought chilled foods had to be exactly that - chilled in a refrigerator until served to a person ready to eat - surely this is a public health issue? We ended up very sick & I was actually sick at the show - we both missed out on Christmas Day because we were stuck in our hotel bed with sickness and diarrhoea - we can't prove it was the Rock a Hula food but apart from a breakfast of cereal, this was the only meal and the only fish we had eaten that day and it tasted wrong (it was the only off tasting seafood all trip) and our dinner the previous evening had been at the Azure for which there were no issues with medium/well steaks. All the steak is served rare which is an option (but there was no option) not everyone would choose - surely go for a medium as this is likely to be an cooking style to please more people, the food that should have been served hot was all cold.. There is very little alcohol in the cocktails, and the 'star' performers are mediocre, the local support cast, who are amateur one presumes, were better - this is not value for money and we knew it would be cheesy but thought hey it's Christmas Eve this should be either good or entertaining with some good food but it didn't meet any of our pretty low expectations. Save your money people - Elvis left the building before this performance began.

12/24/18 experience—Please save your money. Better off going out and having a nice dinner somewhere like Dukes or Sansei for seafood or Sushi. We paid for VIP upgrade for seats by stage and meal served rather than buffet (BIG MISTAKE). The salmon tasted fishy, the beef was chewy and the drinks were juice and not Mai Tai’s. Not sure if buffet would have been better but I certainly DO NOT recommend Rock-A-Hula. I can’t believe this show and dinner got great reviews. I am easily pleased and very flexible but I only wished I would have chose something other than this, especially on Christmas Eve. Lesson learned don’t believe all good reviews. Aloha.
