"Magic of Polynesia at Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort"
August, 2016
It was a last-minute decision of ours to see this show, as we had a spare evening. What a great decision we made! It is an amazing show and John Hirokawa is an excellent illusionist, as well as putting together a wonderful show. As well as his act, there were Polynesian dancers and a stunning fire act It's suitable for families, has humour as well as great magic acts and various types of Polynesian dancing. Well worth seeing.
Tip: People can either book for dinner & the show or just for the show. We elected to forgo dinner + we had heard that dinner was nothing special.

Another reviewer mentioned second-tier-Vegas-style show. Spot on. That said, the lottery ticket in the box trick is still fascinating me. Don't bother with premium seating. Our premium seating was mid-stage, but it was at least 2/3 of the way to the back of the venue and afforded no additional ability to view the magic. We did not purchase the dinner, but with the time zone change, we were happy to dine after the show at another of the many options on Waikiki. We would opt for the same again.

We attended this dinner show tonight- the magician was awesome- great tricks and very funny The Polynesian revue was excellent- the Elvis impersonator sang well but was a little creepy The food was not good- we barely ate it.

Even without my unfortunate circumstance the night I attended, the Magic of Polynesia is a tad tired, tattered, second-tier-Vegas-style attraction. The star is personable, and his magic (from what I was able to see) and the tad ersatz hula-dance flourishes were entertaining enough on a stormy Honolulu evening. The particular trouble during the night I attended began with a hiccup with my hotel concierge, who failed to make the notation in the right place that we "upgraded" our meal (to the tune of an extra $90) for the seafood dinner so lavishly displayed on the brochure. The result was, the catering staff of the show did not know of our choice and didn't bother to contact us beforehand. So we waited and waited to be served our deluxe dinner only to finally get a salad just as the actual show began and cluelessly waited in vein for our seafood platter. Once the show began, theater was so dark, we could barely make out our eventual entree, which the staff decided, for some reason, would be an alleged steak fillet mignon so tough and fatty it was inedible (and, for a champion eater like me, that's saying a lot). The manager explained that they were not told of our seafood selection (but, then again, neither were they told that steak would be our selection), and had no standby seafood plate since this is a catered operation. I simply couldn't take a second bit of the beef (not to mention being barely able to cut it), so I opted to have the budget fish fillet meal, which they seem to have on hand. The odd thing is, there didn't seem to be anyone having the deluxe seafood dinner, which makes me wonder if this was some sort of bait-and-switch. In any event, our meal was further hindered by having the dine in the near dark (a single candle was of no help) and negotiating the well-meaning but intrusive waiter chiming in "Is everything all right?" almost exactly at the climax of every other magic-act. I literally missed completely three of the highlights of the show -- not including the advertised biggest highlight, the deluxe dinner beforehand.

This is a great attraction at Waikiki . The food was delicious and the serving staff were very gracious. The show itself was great. We had went to the Starlight Luau at the Hilton Hawaiian Village earlier in our stay. I wish we would have saved our money. This was a much more entertaining event. It was definitely worth the time and money!
