"Unit G-101 some good, some bad, MANY bugs"

Net/net - we would not stay in unit G-101 again and after having stayed in G-101, we would not risk another unit in the development unless we got first hand knowledge that the issues below were not present in those units. This unit gives the appearance of an owner putting the minimal amount of investment into the property to keep it up to a resort standard and milking the unit for all the revenue possible. Having said that, let me discuss the good and the bad. The overall resort of Mauna Lani is great Restaurants, a beach club, a grocery store, shops, a spa, golf. Unit notes - the good: 1) The view in and of itself almost warrants an excellent rating. This is why we did not give this unit a "terrible" rating. 2) It was very quiet, but no one was in the unit above us. Also, we were here in October, so it was off season. In a week, we only saw two other people at the pool. 3) The pool area and grill area are both very nice. 4) Covered parking. 5) The Beach Club. 6) The resort as a whole seems well maintained. 7) The front desk staff are fantastic - friendly, attentive. 8) Daily housekeeping. 9) No resort fee. Free parking. The bad - 1) Bugs, bugs, and more bugs. Lots of small dark little bugs walking around. Not sure what they were. Luckily they did not bite or we would look like we have measles. Roaches - dead, but in a visible spot, so they were alive until they walked out from the shadows and croaked. There were bug traps all over the place and yet there were still many live bugs. 2) Dated and worn - SubZero should be commended as I think the refrigerator may be an original appliance. So dated you could see the ravages of the elements on the internal shelving. Dishwasher might have been original as well as it was an eggshell color, likely from the white color having faded over the decades. 3 different finishes across the appliances - wood grain, black, white. Furniture was old, many stains on the couch cushions. Throw rugs were not fit for Goodwill. 3) Nickel-and-dime - You are paying top dollar, but despite the daily housekeeping, you have to pay for extra packets of coffee and laundry detergent. Shampoo was a "conditioning shampoo", i.e. the cheap stuff they use at Motel 6 to avoid having to give you both shampoo and conditioner. 4) No High-Def TV - OK, I know you are thinking I should lighten up and enjoy the vacation. Well, October is perfect for Hawaii - small crowds, football, and playoff baseball. After all you can only lay at the pool/beach so much. Watching games on low def where the picture is stretched to the point you can't see the score is not my idea of a luxury residence. AWFUL. TV was an old 27" Sony Bravia (commend Sony on a good decades old product as well) and was in a cabinet at near floor level. Cable channels were the minimal package - had to watch two baseball games on my iPad. The unit did have a VHS player, so bring tapes along. Overall we were disappointed as the items noted would not require much of an investment to have been avoided.

"Close to heaven, just one problem"

This condo development is part of a larger area that includes the Mauna Lani Hotel & the Fairmont Orchid. Driving in from the main highway you come to a roundabout from which you can go to either of the three lodging areas or to the shopping center right there, which include restaurants, shops, & a small but very comprehensive supermarket. Driving around toward the ML Point entrance you go past the road to a public black sand beach (we went once-it has very little shade), & after registering at the office, go through the gates to your unit. Our 1-bedroom condo was 'oceanview' which meant looking over a short lawn, lava field, & fairway to the ocean through panoramic glass doors. The unit itself had breathtaking, upscale finishes that must have cost the owner (more about him/her later) a bundle, & that we really appreciated. The bedroom was very large, with a desk area adjoining, & a large bath; there was also a halfbath just off the foyer. The kitchen was equipped with everything we could have wished for, from the basics to a cooler & a rice cooker. Daily housekeeping kept everything shipshape. The pool/hot tub/sauna/grilling area is close to the 'D' building, & we went several times, usually in the evenings, when we were the only people there. Only once, about 11 a.m., did we find other swimmers. This area is secluded & lovely. BTW, free copies of the Honolulu newspaper are available there in the mornings. There's so much to do that it wasn't necessary to leave the area! Access to the gated beach club is included with a key card (don't lose it or you're out $100), & the beach there is delightful. The waters are serene, & snorkeling is great. Cabanas & lounge chairs are also complementery, first-come, first-served. The bar/restaurant opens at 11 so there's no need to bring food unless you want to. We walked the shoreline path from our unit around to the beach, 'hiked' the royal fish pond area, visited the petroglyphs.....all in or close to the development. Only glitch was that as soon as we arrived (on a Tuesday) I started a load of wash & the washer immediately overflowed. Nate, the wonderful head maintenance engineer, came right away & thought he'd fixed it, but the next load overflowed worse, soaking the carpet in the hall, & the bathroom floor, so he had to disconnect the unit. The office manager offered to move us to another unit but it was upstairs & had only fairway views, not the oceanview we'd paid for, so I said no. Besides, we really loved the unit we were in. I asked that instead, could we have our laundry done by the company free? No, not possible, but they offered to open another vacant unit near ours for me to do the laundry that day. And no, they couldn't give us any kind of restaurant comp for our inconvenience, either. Part of the reason for not doing anything more was that we had booked through a third party (Pleasant Holidays). Anyhow, since clothes needed washing, I went down the other unit & spent the afternoon dealing with laundry. The AC was off, & things got so hot that I turned it on for the duration of my visit. (And, of course, turned it off when I left.) After stewing all evening, I called Pleasant Holidays, the aforementioned third party, to ask for their guidance in the situation. The PH rep put me on hold while she called ML Point's office, then came back a few minutes later to explain that there were no other oceanview, 1 bedroom units available for us to move to (okay, I get that), but that if we could not work out something to our satisfaction, to call her again. A little while later we got a call from the office, offering us a check for the amount of 1 night's stay for our inconvenience, & saying that they would contact the unit owner to see how he/she wanted to proceed. We could also continue to use the vacant unit's laundry facilities. Because we liked our own unit so much except for the soggy carpet, we agreed. Maintenance also brought in a large fan, pulled up the carpet, & ran the fan 24/7 for a couple of days to try to dry it out. Thankfully, we usually sleep with a white noise machine, so the fan noise was a substitute. All ended well, with the unit owner having a new LG washer/dryer installed on Friday. Since we were staying till the next Tuesday, that worked out fine. Except for the washer/dryer situation, which was resolved in 3 days, the condo was perfect, the location perfect, the amenities perfect. And after writing this review, I want to go back NOW.

The Mauna Lani Point resort is definitely a high end resort with good amenities and service. We had a good time at the resort and would recommend it for a relaxing stay with family. There were a few glitches during our stay (details below) which would make me recommend a 4.5 star rating. Positives: Rooms - The rooms are one of the highlights of the property. Our unit was spacious and well-furnished with great views of the resort grounds and ocean. The kitchen was well stocked and we also had a washer-dryer in our unit. Views - We had an ocean view unit but the ocean is at a distance. I don’t believe there are any truly ocean front units on the property. We did catch views of beautiful sunsets from our unit and a little walk to the edge of the resort grounds gets you better views of the ocean and sunsets. Beach - Guests at the resort are given a special beach access card which entitles them access to the private beach. The beach is not walkable from the resort if you have small kids in tow. The beach is small but quiet and is not too crowded before Noon. We had a good time at the beach. Pool - There is only 1 pool on property but it was not crowded in the mornings. Young kids can swim in the shallow part of the pool. There is also a hot tub for adults next to the pool. Common Kitchen area - There is a common kitchen area near the swimming pool which can be used for barbecue picnics. Grounds - The resort grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. There is lava rock spread all over the grounds which gives it a local feel. Parking - There is open parking available next to the units and we never had a problem finding an open spot. Black Sand Beach - There is a black sand beach on the resort which is easily accessible (by car) to the guests. Recommend visiting during the morning times as the sand can get pretty hot by Noon. Negatives: Housekeeping - The housekeeping was hit or miss as we felt they didn’t do a thorough job on some days. Also they never replaced the soaps and shampoos. Front desk - We noticed ants on one of our beds during the daytime and promptly reported it to the front desk. The guy taking the call said he would have housekeeping spray for ants. The ants were gone that night but came back the next morning. We had to call a second time for the problem to be addressed. Other than this, the Front Desk staff were mostly friendly and helpful. Neutral: Location - The resort is located in a quiet area but yet close to the Waikoloa beach resort area. However, it is not really walkable to restaurants and shopping.

The location of the condo unit in which we stayed at Mauna Lani Point was awesome. There are several similar units in the same location. Overlooking the 15th hole of the Mauna Lani south course and the bay. Very warm during the day but sitting on the balcony with the trade winds as your constant companion was pleasant in the extreme. One of the few places I have been were the cost is justified. Be careful in the selection of the unit. Do your research and you will be well rewarded. Get a two bedroom unit and share it with friends or family.

First, any review is directly relative to expectations. With that said, I had no expectations when we arrived at Mauna Lani Point with my family of four (two young children). The grounds were beautiful, pretty obvious as you drive through a golf course. If you are lucky, you might see some of the wild goats that like to drink from the numerous water holes. After getting the keys for the condo, we headed through the PIN based gates to look for the "C" units. Pulling up, we were greeted by a gentleman (Alex) showing us which covered parking spot to pull into. Not expecting any help, it was awesome to have Alex help with all the bags and show us around the unit and how to use all the available tech. This condo was "WOW"! My wife had worked with a travel agent to find this accommodation, so I caught myself looking sternly at her and asking how much did this cost. Turns out it was actually less than our room at the Westin on Maui. I'll keep the details to a minimum as you can likely find full descriptions via Google. The open floor plan opens to a dropped floor that is finished by full glass wall-to-wall doors that overlook part of the gulf course and the ocean, beautiful. The kitchen is awesome with high-end appliances and beautiful granite countertops that match the accents in the floor. The master bedroom is huge with a nice desk area and separate exit. The unit comes with a nice pull-out sofa (for kid #1) and a Murphy bed that comes out of the entertainment center (for kid #2). Now to the outdoors, after all that is why we came to Hawaii. The grounds are impeccable. You can walk onto the gulf course, and find paths that traverse through the lava remnants. There is a small black sand beach just next to hole 15 tee area, but it is posted not to swim etc. The pool is just a short walk and is surrounded by amazing amenities. There are 5 gas grills for guests and ample outdoor table and chairs as well as a full outdoor kitchen, including sink, oven, and refrigerator (kept out margaritas cold!). Within the pool area, there is a spa (which is hot!) and really nice bathrooms and outdoor shower. There is only one table with an umbrella, but shade could be found by moving under the surrounding canopy. The rules for the pool are typical for most pools, and there is no lifeguard on duty. I was concerned that the kids would not be able to play here, as most condo resorts are not typically kid friendly, especially with a mix of owners and rentals, but we found that there were plenty of other kids around which set the bar. The beach club area is nice with plenty of seats available and water play rentals available, but note they close around 3 each day. We only went to the beach one day, as the water is too mild to play in the waves. As an alternative, we found Hapuna Beach which was worth the drive and the $5 parking fee. The Shops at Mauna Lani is worth checking out. There is a nice little coffee shop that we frequented and a grocery store. I think the shop area is working to bring in more people, because there was a really good Polynesian show put on twice a week (maybe Tuesday and Thursday) for free.
