Whether you are booking through a travel site or directly through Outrigger, here is a list of the things to expect. First, there is a cleaning fee that is not included when booking on a travel site or mentioned that adds on an additional $190 (minimum, because you can’t turn down the towel exchange) to your stay. This ate into our budget for the trip. At the time of booking we were deciding between the Plantation and a different place. We picked the Plantation because of the price, if the additional the fee would have been disclosed we would have stayed elsewhere. Second, no A/C. Some travel sites say that the rooms have A/C but they do not. Third, there is no pool onsite as shown in many of the pictures. The pool is located at the Athletic Club across the street. Third, “beach front” means that some of the condos are close to the beach but the majority are not. Fourth, no privacy. The rooms do not windows that can be closed, only shutters. You will hear everyone, the street, events, chickens, cats, and everything else. Finally, no late check-out. Our experience would have been better if this was communicated to us from the employees working at the Plantation. We were told that we could do late check out a few weeks prior when we asked; let the Plantation know a day before when we asked at check-in; they don’t do late check-out when we asked the day before check-out and late check could only be done if paid in advance was what we were finally told by a manager. However the room was already booked so it could not be used for late check-out but we could use a hospitality room for an hour. Our stay was decent. The room was nice, the overhead fans helped but having A/C in the room would be awesome. After a day of hiking, riding, swimming, all you want to do is cool down and not go to a room that is just as warm as it is outside. The rooms are extremely noisy because the windows only have shutters on them. We could hear our neighbors when they were eating dinner, taking showers, etc. We had a rooster that would come by about 2:00 am and crow away. We were close to Piopu Road and could hear the traffic. There was a concert across the street that went until around 11:00 pm that kept us up. We tried to sleep in but the grounds keepers start at 9:00 am.

"Great location!"

The grounds of the property are absolutely gorgeous! This is not really a “hotel”, persay. It’s more of a condo rental, similar to Airbnb, because each unit is privately owned and Castle Kiahuna serves as a property manager. The room was spacious but a little dated. The lack of ac didn’t bother us at all because the breeze is glorious. We didn’t use the pool because it was in the opposite direction of the beach. I actually used the pool of next door aloha Kea resort because it was more convenient to our room! Shhh don’t tell. There’s beach access and Poipu is so pretty. I would definitely come back and if the opportunity arose, I’d happily buy one of those units someday!

"Old World Plantation Style Comfort"

Take a trip back to a time of manicured lawns and gardens with the palm trees swaying in the ocean breeze to the Kiahuna Plantation Resort in Poipu. We stayed in Outrigger managed Oceanview Building 6-#27, which is located upstairs, with no elevator, so you must be able to navigate the stairs with your luggage. Ours was a well equipped one bedroom condo with plantation style furniture that looked great. Outdoor lounge chairs and table for eating outside are comfortable. Remodeled Kitchen well stocked. Remodeled bathroom with walk in shower and outrigger bath products. Towels are replaced every 3 days, no linen change unless you want to pay extra for it. Daily resort fee covers beach towels, water toys and parking pass. We were treated to beautiful sunny days, rainy days and incredible sunsets. Being right on the ocean was the best part of all. We were able to play tennis across the street at the Poipu Beach Athletic Club, also covered in the daily resort fee, and use their swimming pool and workout room too. Great location in Poipu, close to everything and right on the ocean. Would definitely come back.

This was our first visit to Kauai and Kiahuna Plantation Resort so we don’t have much to compare it to, but for the most part, it met all our standards and expectations. Based on other reviewers, here is what I can add or reiterate. *There is no room service during your stay. You can opt for cleaning services in the middle of your stay for an additional fee. Upon checking out, you are charged a cleaning fee. This was made known to me while booking, and again, explained to me when checking in. So I’m not sure why some reviewers were caught off guard or shocked. To me, this is quite normal and to be expected. We stayed for 5 nights and had our towels replenished mid stay free of charge. Just remember to hang up your towel after each use! *It seems the condominiums are individually owned and it is up to the owner of the condo to provide updates and remodeling. Would it be nice to see exactly what you are getting or exactly where the condo is located before booking? Yes. I wish that would have been an option. Luckily, we were okay with our accommodations. Nothing fancy, but nothing to complain about either. I did desire to be closer to the beach and not on the main road, but even that had an unexpected perk I will get to. *There is no air conditioning people! Again, this is easily noticeable when researching the accommodations provided. If you are sensitive to heat and humidity, please look elsewhere or keep your fingers crossed for cooler weather. There were ceiling fans in each room and the cross breeze from the front to the back of the condo was sufficient enough to keep us cool. *The grounds of the resort were beautiful and well maintained, with large grass areas, gardens, bbq areas and plenty of walking paths for leisure strolls. *The beach area was somewhat on the small side especially during high tide, shore break that may be a little intense for little children, (although I saw plenty of kids who didn’t let that stop them for enjoying the water) and can be a 5-10 minute walk depending on where your condo is located. There is a beach hut where you are allowed to obtain and exchange your beach towels as many times as needed so long as you return them. You can also rent boogie boards, surf boards, and even take surfing lessons. The beach was always clean and well maintained. *There is another beach access to the very south of the resort that we stumbled on by accident. A short walk marked by a small sign that said “beach access” will take you to the beach located in front of the Marriot. We found this beach to be prettier, but more hustle and bustle with patrons. You can also walk to Poipu Beach from here and have access to great snorkeling, a kiddie beach, and great food! All without getting in the car. I wish we were told about this or found this sooner. *Our condo was closest to the main road. In fact, our back lanai overlooked the parking lot and through the wall of bushes, the road. Never once did this cause me any inconvenience. I did not hear traffic or any noise from the parking lot. In fact, it made loading and unloading the car quick and easy. Literally right across the street was a nice shopping center that included Starbucks, great food, and shops for all your needs. All I had to do was walk across the street and we were able to enjoy Puka Dogs made famous by Anthony Bourdain. (They were nothing short of amazing!) *There is no pool on the resort property, but you are allowed access to the athletic club across the street, including their pool. You can walk there, but we drove there because it can be quite the hike with kids. Again, we didn’t visit Kauai to hang out at the pool and this was not an inconvenience for us. We did utilize it in between activities and found it to be a nice perk. The pool was large with a slide, hot tub, and shallow kiddie area with sand. There is also a bar and grill (although very pricy! We paid $75 for cokes and cheeseburgers for two adults, two children) that came in handy after swimming for a while. My only complaint, they close at 7pm. I would have used it more as an evening activity after exploring the island all day. Or to relax in the hot tub in the evenings to wind down and enjoy a cocktail. Overall, I was pleased with our stay. The location cannot be beat and central to everything you may need or want, mostly within walking distance. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Our condo and the grounds were clean and beautifully well maintained. If you’re anything like us, you will be out exploring most of the time, and only using your room to refresh and regenerate. We would not hesitate to stay again. Aloha!
