Our host and driver John O. was great. Gave interesting facts about the Island and it's history. Kept it like a family outing interacting playfully helping a Mom with two toddlers. Great stops along the way, too. Highly recommended especially with John O. 🌺

"Enjoyed the Tour"

We took the "Volcano by Night" tour and were wondering why it was called that when we left our hotel at 9:45 in the morning. This was really more of an island tour, with an afternoon/evening tour of the volcano thrown in. But this tour was recommended by our hotel, and we were not interested in doing extensive hiking or a gut-wrenching helicopter tour to see the lava. We left from Waikoloa, which is quite a long drive to the volcano, so our first stop was a coffee plantation where coffee was sold for $100/lb, where we had lunch, picnic style, with beautiful hilltop views of Kona. Honestly I could have done without that stop and would have liked getting to the volcano earlier to explore more of it. But it was a great place to enjoy our lunch. The next stop was the black sand beach, which was beautiful and we were lucky to see several turtles resting on the sand. (Keep your distance as they are wild creatures who are trying to rest and relax). We then stopped at a bakery near the black sand beach, for additional snacks, and the guide joked that this should be called an "eating tour" due to all the food stops we make. By late afternoon, we finally arrived at the volcano. We looked at several vistas and hiked through the rainforest and the Thurston Lava Tube. We also visited several steam vents. Our guide was Aaron and he actually studied geology at UC San Diego, so he was very knowledgeable about the volcano and geology of Hawaii in general. Now it was dinner time, and we needed to stall awhile before dark, in preparation for seeing the glow of the volcano at night. So we stopped at the Volcano Winery for a BBQ dinner and tour of the winery itself. They had an interesting operation and the stop was definitely worthwhile. By now it was close to twilight so we went to the Jaggar Museum and watched the volcano begin to glow as the sky darkened. I was glad I brought binoculars as I could really make out a lot of spitting and flowing lava that others probably couldn't see with the naked eye. We stayed until around 7 pm and then made our way back to Waikoloa via Hilo and the Saddle Road. All in all, we enjoyed the trip and were happy to leave the long drive to someone else. But if you really want to spend time at the volcano, you may want to look at a different tour.

"Not worth the money"

Overall I'm extremely dissapointed by this tour! My family took this Tour because we thought this would be the best way to see as much off volcano national park as possible. This tour took about 7 hours but only had 4 stops (look at the stollen lava stream from 2014, lava tubes, lookout to the volcano & the ... Museum where you can see the volcano from a bit more up close (however it's stil very far away)). All off these stops you could easily visit yourself! We didn't even get close to (seeing) lava, which was yet another dissapointment. Most of the time during the tour you're either in the car or at the winery for dinner. Dinner was okay but very basic. The Tour also promissed luch, however this was not privided (they only handed out some chips, candy bars and sodas). At the different destinations the Tour guide didn't gave any information (he was kind though). He only gave information about the island and volcanic activity during the drives. This was quiet dissapointing as well. Overall this tour is definitely not worth your money (125$ a person!!!!!). Just do it yourself you will be able to see way more for way less money.
