This is such a great way to see and explore this amazing island with all of its diverse climates and history....from desserts to volcanoes, to tropical canyons and beaches and native Island history. You get to listen to wonderful coreographed music all while learning amazing facts and getting to ask any questions you have. We started off our big Island visit with this tour and talked about it for the rest of our trip....we’re still talking about it. Treat yourselves, you won’t regret it.

On our third visit to the Big Island we finally decided to take this flight. It was without a doubt the most amazing thing I have ever done. The waterfalls, the valleys, the cliffs all showcased the beauty of the Big Island. It is pricey for us Canadians, even so, I’m glad I did it. Those memories are priceless.

A perfect 2 hour flight over the Big Island. No active lava flows but able to flow pattern in the air. The NE coast waterfalls were simply amazing. It was amazing to hover just in front of waterfall. No problems with air sickness. I really liked flying over the volcanos.

"Big Island Spectacular-A Must Do!"

Our family had the most memorable experience with Blue Hawaiian helicopters-Big Island Spectacular excursion on Christmas Day. Our pilot, Toshi, made this trip everything we could have hoped for and more. Our 2 young tennage boys got to sit with the Toshi in the front & my younger son got to be “co-pilot”. Not a fan of flying or heights, but I had no problem at all. It was such a smooth experience. The views were breathtaking and we learned a lot about the climate and volcanoes on the island. And the music added to the already amazing ride. Toshi has been doing this for 20 years and he talks and flies without skipping a beat. Made it informative and fun. He includes everyone in conversation & answers any questions. (6 riders in total) This is a pricey excursion but well worth it. Our boys are still talking about it and ranked it the best thing they did on our trip to Big Island & Maui. A Christmas they will never forgot. Highly recommend.

My family and I (4 of us) did the helicopter ride over the island. 1 hr 45 min. We figured this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We ended up having a private helicopter, the older one. Greg was our pilot. I can’t say enough about how fabulous this was. The music playing was awesome. The commentary and all thAt Greg added was exceptional. We were in absolute awe throughout. I cried bc I witnessed true beauty and was so grateful for the experience. We smiled the whole time. Do not miss this. Do not skimp. Get the whole expensive trip. ❤️❤️🏝🏝🌋🌋

Frequently Asked Questions about Blue Hawaiian Waikoloa Helicopter Tours

Do you make a video of our actual tour? How long is it?
Every flight is captured on a high-quality DVD. Each helicopter is equipped with four cameras; three external and one in the cabin. The video recording begins during the boarding process. On the video, you'll most likely first see yourself as you approach the aircraft for boarding. To orchestrate the most interesting video, the pilot chooses between the forward, side or internal camera as the flight progresses. The cabin camera, for example, usually shows you right after lift-off as it is so much fun to capture our guests’ expressions of amazement. The recording is continuous until landing and includes digital quality music chosen to complement the changing scenery, plus all the pilot's narration. The video is available for purchase right after you return from your flight.

What should we wear?
Our helicopters are temperature-controlled so dress comfortably but wear dark clothing to minimize any window reflections. If your flight includes a landing at higher elevations, bring a sweater in case it's chilly. Hats are not allowed to be worn around the helicopters as they can fly up into the rotors and damage the aircraft. We will be happy to hold any hats for you until you return from your tour.

Do you recommend taking anti-motion sickness medication?
If you are particularly prone to motion sickness, taking a precautionary anti-motion sickness medication is a good idea. However, our flights are very smooth and turns are slow and gentle. This is a professional scenic tour, not a thrill ride. Most people do not experience motion sickness and do not need an anti-motion sickness medication.

Will we be the only ones in the helicopter? How is seating arranged?
Unless you charter the complete helicopter you will be sharing the flight with other guests. We try to seat couples and families side-by-side as much as possible. We cannot guarantee particular seating as it is often dictated by our FAA approved “weight and balance” program. However, visibility from every seat is excellent in both our A-Stars and Eco-Stars, since there are no cabin partitions that would block part of the view as is the case on other types of helicopters.

Are we going to see lava?
Your only chance of seeing flowing lava is on the Big Island at the Big Island Spectacular tour. Odds are good that you will see flowing lava but no particular sight can be guaranteed. Routes and times vary with wind and weather, and volcanic activity changes hourly.
