This high-altitude drive over Saddle Road to Hilo and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the newest and most exciting sightseeing tour on the island. This tour showcases the raw nature of the active volcano; Kilauea!

In our brand new Mercedes Sprinter Passenger van, we’ll drive over Saddle Road (2033 m. in elevation) through Parker Ranch, between the largest volcanoes in the road (Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa), and make a brief stop at Mauna Kea State Park for a light lunch. From there, we’ll continue along the Saddle and drop down into the historic town of Hilo. The first stop in Hilo is Rainbow Falls! Experience the beauty of a Hawaiian waterfall and take pictures under the mango trees! Passing by downtown, we’ll stop at the King Kamehameha statue and pay respects to Hawaii’s Great King. Across the bridge and near the airport we’ll be sure to stop for about 20 minutes at Big Island Candies for a bathroom break. While there, guests are able to sample their famous cookies, sip some Kona Coffee, or cool off with an ice cream or smoothie. From there, we’ll head directly to one of the world’s most-active volcanoes; Kilauea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

At Kilauea National Park, Kailani’s guides will show off the amazing landscapes including Steam Vents, Halemaumau Crater’s Smoke Plume, Jaggar Museum’s view of Kilauea Caldera, and Thurston Lava Tube! Just before sunset, we’ll provide an all-inclusive sit-down dinner at Volcano’s finest restaurant – Kilauea Lodge! Choose from three entrees, bread, soups, salads, and a beverage of your choice. After dinner, we’ll drive to Jaggar Museum, the best viewpoint for the nighttime glow at Halemaumau Crater! Finally, leave the driving to us as we journey back over Saddle Road to return you to your hotel. Depending on the weather, the guide may stop briefly for stargazing along Saddle Road.

Points of Interest: Rainbow Falls, Hilo’s King Kamehameha Statue, Big Island Candies, Jaggar Museum, Kilauea Caldera, Steam Vents, Halemaumau Crater, Thurston Lava Tube, Kilauea Iki Crater, Saddle Road, Mauna Kea State Park, Kilauea Lodge

Big Island Deluxe Tour is the way to go! We were a family of 3 and happened to be with 2 other delightful families which made our trip more special! Our tour guide David Human was the absolute gem! He was thoughtful with each guest and family. Breakfast and lunch were arranged for us and made several stops for some yummy snacks . I highly recommend this tour group, we commend the owner for how he runs his company as it translates to our experience at the Big Island. Mahalo!

"Great tour with Lauren"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5

It was a great way to get a feel for the layout of Big Island. We had a terrific guide, Lauren, who being a geologist herself, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The highlights were going to the black sand beach (I wish they had told us in advance that there would have been time for a swim there) and looking over the edge of the crater of the active volcano. Other stops at Kono Joe's and the waterfalls were also terrific. The whole tour ran really smoothly and lunch was great. Despite the slight limitations of the park shutdown, the tour was absolutely first class. Would unreservedly recommend it to anyone with a limited time on Big Island.

"Island circle tour"

Did an island tour with Lauren during the holiday break. She was amazing - driving us around the entire island and being a geologist by training, one of the most insightful guides we have had. We learned a lot about the history of the island, the science behind the formation of the volcanos, and the makeup of different parts of the island today. Favorite parts were the views from the coffee estate, learning about the eruption earlier this year and how it changed the landscape of the island, and Akaka falls. It is a long day and a lot of driving, if you had a long time on Kona / Hilo, you could split it up and drive yourself - but this tour is great as a primer or if you have limited time

We did this a year ago when we visited Hawaii together for the first time! I have considered it ever since. On our return this year we absolutely must take our guests with us and head out in new discovery, hopefully with Zane Smith! Truly this is the best tour I’ve ever had. It was the full 11 hours including meals and a delightful stop at a Hawaiian candy shop along the way. What made the visit was our guide, Zane. He captured our imagination and helped us to see what was before us and imagine what ‘was’ and what ‘could be’ considering the unique geology of the area! He was ‘zany’ in his approach, but intellectually stimulating! He’s a retired or “out of work” volcanologist so our information was thorough and entertaining! (I’m a retired science teacher, so I must reinforce the importance of accurate information delivery). Our hope is that Zane is still available- with all the activity in the region I wouldn’t be surprised if he was otherwise occupied! Truly, he made the tour!
